Solar Water Heating Systems, also known as Domestic Water Heaters,  are generally made up of three major components.

· The Solar Panel also known as a Solar Collector–Insulated, weatherproof boxes with a black absorber plate and either a glass or plastic covering. Solar panels are 4’ x 8’ or 4’ x 10’, and they are  installed securely to the roof or other structure.

· The Solar Storage Tank A water heater that is slightly larger than conventional water heaters. This is because solar heat is available only during the day and sufficient hot water must be collected to meet evening and morning requirements. Solar storage tanks have an additional inlet and outlet for circulation to the collector. The tanks are generally 50-120 Gallons.

· The Circulating System consists of a pump, control box (either photovoltaic or electric), valves and the pipes running to and from the collector.

Water is pumped from the Solar Storage Tank to the solar panel , heated from the sun and returned back to the storage tank via the circulation system.

Solar Systems are designed to deliver the optimum amount of hot water for most of the year. However, in winter there sometimes may not be sufficient solar heat gain to deliver sufficient hot water. In this case a electric booster is normally used to heat the water.

Sizing - The most common Solar Water Heating System consist of one (1) 4’ x 10’ Solar Panel, one (1) 80 Gallon Solar storage tank, and a circulating system. This provides enough hot water for a family of four. Other sizes are available for larger families or greater hot water demand.
